If you are living with a partner and they meet certain conditions, we will pay them a pension if you die. This type of partner is called an eligible cohabiting partner. Since 2014, you no longer need to register your partner’s details with us. If you die, we will simply check you have met all the following conditions for at least two years continuously:
- You and your partner have lived together as a couple (like a married couple or civil partners would), and
- You were both free to marry or form a civil partnership with each other, and
- Neither of you have been married or a civil partnership with someone else during the last two years, and
- Your partner has depended on you financially (in other words you had the higher income) or you have depended on each other financially (on other words you relied on your joint finances to support your standard of living)
We will ask for documents such as utility bills to check this is the case.
